Confidentiality is a professional agreement which respects the client’s privacy by not sharing any information outside of a counselling session, unless there is serious cause for concern. If a child appears to be at risk of significant harm, then it may be appropriate to seek help from other organisations to help keep them safe. Counsellors have a duty of disclosure where the counsellor has a serious concern for the welfare and safety of the child or others. The counsellor would aim to discuss this first with the child, the safeguarding lead and parents/guardians.
